José Mujica, the former president of Uruguay, is often referred to as the world's poorest president. He earned this nickname because he donated 90% of his salary to charity and lived in a modest farmhouse instead of the presidential palace. He was also known for his humble lifestyle, driving an old Volkswagen Beetle and wearing simple clothes. Mujica was a former guerrilla fighter who spent 13 years in prison during the military dictatorship. He became president in 2010 and led a progressive agenda that included legalizing marijuana, abortion and same-sex marriage.
