DBAG has been split up in working companies, that each own their own rolling stock. these companies are:
DB Personenverkehr (passenger, divided in Fernverkehr, Regio and until 2010 also Stadtverkehr)
Stinnes/Railion/DB Schenker/DB Cargo AG (freight traffic)
DB Netz AG (infrastructure)
DB Station und Service AG (stations)
In April 2000 the meaning of DB was officially changed from "Deutsche Bahn" to "Die Bahn", or "The Railway". In September 2003 DB Reise & Touristik was renamed to DB Fernverkehr. A new subsidiary DB Personenverkehr now contains all passenger operations. Night trains (with brand name City Night Line) and the car shuttle Niebüll-Sylt were operated by DB Autozug. in October 2013 DB Autozug was merged into DB Fernverkehr, CNL was taken over by the Austrian Railways (not all lines).
Freight traffic was operated by Stinnes, that used Railion Deutschland as trading name for all rail freight traffic formerly operated by DB Cargo.
Since January 2008 DB has 3 main subsidiaries:
DB Bahn for all passenger operations
DB Netze for network and infrastructure related operations
DB Schenker Rail Deutschland AG for freight and logistics
In 2016 DB Schenker Rail was renamed into DB Cargo (again).
DB regio has been split again in 43 regional networks. Five of these have already been separated by integrating infrastructure and operation, and the use of dedicated stock. They can be found in a separate section of this stock list. Their names are Erzgebirgsbahn, Kurhessenbahn, Oberweißbacher Berg- und Schwarzatalbahn, SudOstBayernBahn and since the beginning of 2006 WestFrankenBahn.
Also the S-Bahn Berlin and S-Bahn Hamburg are subsidiaries of the DB AG holding company.
In 2013 long-distance travel amounted 130.9 million passengers (-0.3%) and 36.8 billion passenger-km (-1.6%). Regional traffic grew by 2.3% to 1.94 billion passengers and by 0.5% to 44.4 billion passenger-km. DB Schenker freight fell by 2.2% to 390 million tonnes (230 million tonnes in Germany, -7.2%) and by 1.5% to 104.3 billion tonne-km (75 billion tonne-km in Germany, -4.2%).
*The DB Class 101 is a class of three-phase electric locomotives built by Adtranz and operated by DB Fernverkehr in Germany. 145 locomotives were built between 1996 and 1999 to replace the 30-year-old and aging Class 103 as the flagship of the DB AG, primarily hauling Intercity services. This class encompasses the latest generation of locomotives of the DB.
In the United States, the ALP-46 locomotive is derived from the DB Class 101. Bombardier's TRAXX shares a common heritage.
