Chinese President Xi Jinping, accompanied by his Serbian counterpart Tomislav Nikolic and Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, visited on Sunday Serbia's only steelworks which was just bought by a Chinese company.
In April, Chinese HeSteel Group -- the world's second largest steel producer -- bought the Smederevo Steelworks for about 52 million U.S. dollars. It plans to keep on all workers at the mill, and invest an additional 980 million U.S. dollars over the next two years.
"Distance cannot separate true friends who feel so close even when they are thousands of miles apart. China and Serbia have deep traditional friendship. The two peoples also have special feelings for each other. This should be cherished by us all," said Xi.
The acquisition has set an example for international industrial capacity cooperation between China and central and east European countries.
China is strengthening industrial capacity cooperation worldwide, moving production lines abroad, which creates jobs in other countries while boosting China's exports.
The Chinese government has issued a list of priority sectors in which it wishes to enhance such cooperation, including steel, non-ferrous metal, construction materials, railways, electric power, chemicals, textiles, automobiles, telecommunications and machinery.
China is now the world's largest manufacturing exporter, with a total export volume reaching over 2 trillion U.S. dollars last year. More on: [ Ссылка ]
