STORYLINE:
General David Petraeus, the new commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Saturday in Kabul.
Petraeus arrived in Afghanistan on Friday night to assume command of the international military mission in Afghanistan, having replaced General Stanley McChrystal.
McChrystal was fired last month for intemperate remarks that he and his aides made to Rolling Stone magazine about Obama administration officials, mostly on the civilian side.
Petraeus, who formally assumes the command at a ceremony on Sunday, was spending time on Saturday receiving his first operational update from the NATO staff and in meetings with ground commander Lieutenant General David Rodriguez and the chief of the NATO training command, Lieutenant General William Caldwell, as well as with Karzai.
Petraeus is taking over the 12,000-member NATO-led international force at a time of rising violence and growing doubts in Washington and other allied capitals about the effectiveness of the counterinsurgency strategy, which Petraeus pioneered.
June was the deadliest month for the allied force since the war began in October 2001 with 102 deaths, more than half of them Americans.
