ENGLISH LESSON:
Using verbs in the past, present and future tenses

SYNOPSIS:
Mr. Dan was washing his hands when his friend Paul the Spider appeared! They sang 'The Itsy Bitsy Spider' together, which is Paul's favorite classic song. Mr. Dan helped Paul conquer his fear of going up water spouts and getting washed away. They sang 'The Itsy Bitsy Spider' in the present and future tenses, as well as in the past tense, in which it was originally written.

When Mr. Dan sings 'The Itsy Bitsy Spider' in the present tense, you may have noticed that he uses an INFINITIVE:

'TO' + the verb 'WASH'= TO WASH

The great thing about infinitives is that they can be used in any tense (past, present or future). For instance:

Down came the rain TO WASH the spider out. (Past)
Down comes the rain TO WASH the spider out. (Present)
Down will come the rain TO WASH the spider out. (Future)

The phrase 'to wash the spider out ' is called an INFINITIVE PHRASE. In this sentence, the infinitive phrase acts as an adjective. It gives us information about the rain.

INFINITIVES can be tricky to master when you just read about them. They become much easier to use when you learn them NOTE by NOTE!
