Song #10 Recorded at HarmonyArts 2013. The lyrics are from the Lament for Barney Flanagan by James K. Baxter, New Zealand's Poet Laureate, and were set to music by Gerard. James Keir Baxter (29 June 1926 -- 22 October 1972) was a celebrated figure in New Zealand society. Barney Flanagan, a famous Kiwi publican, drank himself to death. He was the owner of the Hesperus Hotel. Baxter classifies with barely sympathetic vitriol the stereotypes within the environment of the pub. The rapacious and the privileged ignore the death of the publican, remaining ignorant of the bar's shadow dwellers (who will remember Barney). It's enough to give you Fear of Drinking.
