Kenya: Ruto Tries to Quell Anger, Appease Angry Protesters With More Concessions | Firstpost Africa
Kenya's President William Ruto is making more concessions as anger against his government continues to simmer. Ruto has signed law on the reconstitution of the electoral body following nationwide protests. Reconstituting the electoral body was among the talking points in recent demonstrations. The electoral body found itself at the heart of a fierce dispute over the outcome of the 2022 election that brought Ruto to power when four of its seven commissioners disowned the results. Meanwhile, Moody's cut Kenya's debt rating further into junk territory. So, it has been a Catch-22 for Ruto's govt where if it does take action, it faces protests from people, and if it doesn't, lenders, creditors, markets, and rating agencies respond poorly.
