Camaro’s high end ZL1 has been outshined by Ford and Dodge this past year. The Hellcat beats it in raw power and the Mustang GT-350 often is the favorite for track prowess.
But Chevy now says their new ZL1 isn’t just taking muscle cars - it's taking on everybody!
4WheelOnline Intro
The most exciting part is Chevy’s new supercharged performance. The new supercharged 6.2 liter V8 produces 640 horsepower and has a mirrored 640 pound feet of torque.
For those keeping track that’s 60 more horsepower and 80 more pound feet of torque than its predecessor, AND Chevy manages to shave off about 200 pounds.
Two choices of transmission options should also tick the boxes for someone wanting manual fun or top performance.
A six-speed manual with active rev-matching is standard and an all new paddle shifted 10 speed automatic is now an option. We can expect that same 10 speed to roll out in eight other GM vehicles by 2018.
If you don’t like the new look of it, Chevy says it's all a result of new functionality they’re putting in the ZL1.
They did more than a hundred hours of wind-tunnel testing and on-track validation to sculpt the exterior design.
This led to its massive lower grill that’s offering greater airflow and a new hood with a carbon fiber insert and heat extractor to pull out hot air.
A larger front splitter, unique rockers, wide front fenders and a wing-style rear spoiler have all been added in an effort to tune the aerodynamics of the car for high-speed stability.
The interior is loaded with standard Recaro front seats and a sueded flat-bottom steering wheel and shift knob.
Its mechanical finesse is augmented by an updated Magnetic Ride suspension, Performance Traction Management, Custom Launch Control, Driver Mode Selector and an electronic limited slip differential.
Chevy has yet to announce any track or 0-60 times but we’ll be able to find out how it does for ourselves later this year.
So how do you think the new Camaro will fare against other sports cars? Does it even close the gap against the Hellcat or GT350? Let us know in our poll here.
