London Air Ambulances are to trial a device designed to induce therapeutic hypothermia in heart attack and stroke victims. The Rhinochill machine rapidly cools the area around the brain by filling the nasal cavity with cool air. The device helps cool the brain until the patient reaches hospital. Reducing the core body and brain temperature following a heart attack or stroke is thought to help reduce brain injury during the period of reduced blood flow to the brain.
