A group of Franciscan friars were beheading in Morocco in the year 1220AD. They had travelled to that land full of religious zeal and determined to convert the local Muslim population. The local Emir - ruler - warned them repeatedly to stop. But they continued. And paid the ultimate price. This altar in the church of Sao Francisco in Porto, Portugal memorialises what happened in graphic detail. It dates to the 18th century.
