STORYLINE:
Football fans in Berlin recoiled after the men's German football team were knocked out of the European Championships by the men's Spanish football team on Friday.
Spanish substitute Mikel Merino headed Spain into the semi-finals as they snatched a 2-1 win in extra time.
German player Florian Wirtz’s equalizer in the last minute of regulation time sent the gripping quarterfinal to extra time after Dani Olmo — who set up Merino’s winner — netted the opening goal early in the second half.
"We had chances, but unfortunately we didn't take them all. That's how the result came out,” said one German fan.
Germany are hosting the tournament with the match result seeing the Spanish team through to play either Portugal or France.
