See our video of a controlled blast at our Quarry at Gebdykes.
To get stone from the quarry face we need a controlled blast.
First we need to decide how much stone we want to remove from the quarry face to put through our crusher to produce the various sized aggregates we sell.
Once the quantity of material is decided the contractor, who does the blast, will laser profile the face rock to check for cavities and to understand the nature of the face they will be blasting.
This is very important as it allows the contractor to plan the blast to ensure it is safe.
Once the blast has been designed the contractor uses a drill rig to drill, holes which are then charged with explosives.
The explosives are then fired in a sequence which ensures the best quality of material is produced with the least ground vibration.
While we do a blast our Quarries Manager Andy Parker monitors the ground vibration and air over pressure.
