The Anglo-Portuguese alliance is one of the oldest diplomatic alliances in the world still in force. Officially, its history begins in 1373, when Fernando of Portugal and Edward III of England sign a treaty between Portugal and England. However, connections between these two countries can be seen further back, looking at the very beginnings of Portugal, and the context of the Reconquista of the Iberian Peninsula.
In this video, we will observe how English armies first fight in Portugal, how Portugal and England develop trade connections throughout the medieval era, and how the Portuguese interregnum and war for succession deeply influence the Anglo-Portuguese diplomacy.
We will see, too, how it all culminates in a historical marriage contract, unique in the history of these two countries: princess Philippa of Lancaster married king João I of Portugal, and their marriage sealed the unity between both countries. Particularly relevant is also John of Gaunt, son of Edward III of England, also known for his participation in the Hundred-Year War.
A defining moment in both Portuguese History and English History.
