Every month hundreds of worried professionals ask
Google, “Is it normal to make mistakes at work?”
The answer is yes - it is normal to make mistakes at work.
At the end of the day, you’re only human and mistakes
happen, no matter how well-intentioned you may be. However, it becomes problematic when you keep
making mistakes without questioning why it’s
happening or trying to do something about it. Fortunately, there are 4 steps that anyone who keeps
making mistakes can take to help break the pattern.
Step 1: Spend time thinking about your mistakes,
asking questions, and identifying commonalities. Ask yourself questions like:
• Were you stressed/distracted by something at work or at home?
• Was there a defined process? Did you follow it? If not, why?
• Did you have the training, support, and resources you needed?
• Did you ask for help or clarification? If not, why?
Step 2: Create an action plan that includes the resources,
support, and additional training you need going forward.
Step 3: Ask your boss and trusted colleagues for their
feedback on your plan. It is likely that they will bring up
something you may not have otherwise thought of.
Step 4: If your plan of action involves others, explain
your proposed changes and what it means for them
in order to get their support.
If you take these 4 steps, then rest assured you are well
on your way to getting your performance back on track.
