The Slasher genre has provided some of the most vicious villains in the history of horror, but it didn’t spring up overnight. Slashers began as a subgenre of horror movies in the ‘70s, as part of a long lineage of creepy, scary movies like Psycho. Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Leatherface, Chucky, Candyman and more have become cinema icons, despite their grindhouse, low budget origins, and throughout the evolution of horror, the history of slashers shows that the genre quickly came to dominate.

From Halloween to Friday the 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to A Nightmare on Elm Street, the evolution of slashers is a slow, graduation process that led to the current horror boom, along with excellent series like Slash Course and How to Kill. Here on NowThis Nerd, we’ve explored the evolution of horror on various ways, but Slashers just won’t die. Whether we’re hunting down the latest AHS 1984 clip or scene, or awaiting the new Halloween Kills trailer, or even tracking down the best horror compilations we can find and keeping track of the kill count, our thirst for scary movies knows no bounds, and if we’ve learned anything from the history of slashers, it’s hard to keep a good monster down!
