Here I compare three Hornby coaches, all of which are LNER Teaks.
The first is the Super-Detail variety that sell around £45 (2015 prices). These are super in every way, and also a little fragile due to the detail. These are fantastic though.
The second one at the bottom of the picture is a cheaper Railroad Hornby variety, and these sell for around £15 or so. These are more robust but they are too light in the wood.
So the middle coach here represents what I do to the Railroad ones to get them up to standard. I use washes. In fact I use Citadel paints called 'shades', and these are a thinned down paint that needs to be applied 3 or 4 times using a brush. It goes on great without leaving any brush strokes. The shades I use are Reikland Fleshshade, and Seraphim Sepia. Two of each.
It is possible to but detailing kits for the Super Detail coaches, and lights, and perhaps soon creaky sounds. But I prefer not to add these as they in my mind devalue the main range model by adjusting it from the Hornby way of doing it. In fact as a collector I often try to keep things as they were produced for that reason. If you bought the Mona Lisa you'd want the original, not one touched up by me, and I would prefer the original too, so to me they are the nicest. Plus interior details are hard to see anyway. But that is a choice, and as you can see I do modify some Railroad ones.
