Growing up in Oakland all my life, I had no idea what gentrification was until most recently. For the most part we coexist as a community in Oakland. It is at that moment when a person decides to pick up the phone to dial 911 to report a non-emergency incident and makes the story bigger than what it is, it creates a clear and present danger not only to the police but to the person or persons that the caller is reporting on.
Due to gentrification and the increased phone calls placed to 911 in non-emergency situations, I personally felt the need to write this song and bring to light the severity of said calls that result in deaths. There have been countless 911 calls that create a sense of urgency that the first responders have a mindset that the caller is in harm’s way. It is at that time, that the person the call was made on is already considered a threat.
Fortunately, this particular 911 call ended peacefully and brought the community together as a whole. My vision for this video is start a dialogue on a serious note in hopes that something will be done to curtail this frenzy of non-emergency 911 calls being placed and bring to light not just this situation that happened in Oakland, but the ones that ended tragically.
