Cabrini Green housing projects currently under a plan for transformation.
The Cabrini-Green Homes is a composite of four smaller developments built over a 20-year period. The site originated with the construction of the Frances Cabrini Rowhouses in 1942. Known at the time as "Little Sicily," the development served as a stronghold for the city's Italian-American community. By 1962, when the William-Green Homes were added to this composite public housing community property, Cabrini-Green was one of the largest sites in the CHA inventory, with a mostly African-American residential population. In the intervening years, two other wings were added to this community-- Cabrini Extension North and Cabrini Extension South.
Over the years, as violence, gang activity, drugs and physical deterioration plagued Cabrini-Green, the site became a national symbol for the problems associated with public housing.
