Mark Series Part 33
Mark 8: 22-26 (Nigel, GSCMC Central, UK)
Jesus Heals a Blind Man
Mark has carefully edited his Gospel to bring this section of his account into focus around the theme of having our eyes open as to who Jesus really is. Last week we learned how Jesus was frustrated with his own group of initial disciples as they were struggling to grasp this. He suggested they were as ‘blind as the Pharisees’, whose heart heart’s prevented them from being open to the challenge of the ways of Kingdom of God.
This week Nige, our European President brings a reflection based on Jesus’ continued ministry on the margins as the story of the healing of blind man is remembered - as if to say, ‘this is what needs to happen, your eyes need to be opened to who Jesus really is’. Nigel reflects on a recent journey on his Dyna through torrential rain with limited vision and also about his own eyes being opened as to who Jesus is. A new vision, a new insight, a new start, a new way of seeing the world through Christ. Nige ends with the challenge, ‘why not give it a go?’.
Part of the reason for this extended series through Mark’s Gospel is to attempt to paint a picture of who Christ Jesus is, what was his message, and what on earth possessed those early followers to stand strong their faith amid such great persecution? What was it they came to in see in Christ that made such a radical difference, not just to them personally but also in the community they lived in?
Keep tuning in as we continue this series, now reaching the halfway point when Mark starts to disclose the full picture and he records how it started falling into place for his early followers. Buckshot brings next week’s reflection.
