HUMSAFAR -- Companion
The word HUMSAFAR is used to depict 'A Friend' and 'A Companion'. This piece is influenced by the 'Companionship' and the 'Connection' between the two distinct and independent dance forms Kathak and Flamenco, which shares the same roots.
It is said that the Gypsies who migrated to the Andulisian region of Spain during the 14th Century originally came from India. The characterisation of 'free as a gypsy' is expressed through intricate body languages, facial expressions and hand gestures. And this became their dance of freedom. This dance form was an adaptation and absorption of influences from Arabic, Jewish and Moorish Groups who were the inherit ants of the dance form Kathak. The synthesis of these dance styles eventually gave birth to Flamenco.
HUMSAFAR is an attempt to show how two different "Rhythms", "the Soul", "the Mind and Body", "the Gestures and Movements" and the "Passion and Emotion" have merged together to create a new language. Or perhaps is this what we call a Fusion?
