Spread footings are one of the many different types of foundations used in construction.

Common in older residential properties, they have a wider – often stepped –bottom portion. This wider base supports the weight of the load bearing wall it supports and 'spreads' it over a larger area for greater stability.

In this brief video, John shows you exactly what a spread footing looks like and how it works.

The stepped nature of the spread footing can also act as a support for the joists of a suspended wooden floor, as it does in this instance.

This particular property is quite old and in the midst of an extensive renovation. Going back-to-brick allows us to see exactly what we're dealing with, fully refurbish the property and bring it up to current standards.

Spread footings, like strip footings and strap footings are a common form of shallow foundation.
