Kenyan athletes registered mixed performances on the first day of athletic program at Tokyo Olympics today.
Both Benjamin Kigen and Abraham Kibiwott qualified in their respective heats for the 3000m steeplechase finals set for Monday while Leonard Bett failed to advance.
Kigen finished third in heat 1 in a season best time of 8.10.80 , a race won by World silver medallist Lamecha Girma of Ethiopia in a time of 8.09.83 followed by Ruji Miura of Japan in second.
In heat two, Kibiwott comfortably won in 8.12.25 beating Getnet Wale of Ethiopia and Ahmed Abdelwahed of Italy to second and third respectively.
Bett bow out of the games after finishing fifth in the third heat that saw El Bakalli of Morocco post slower time to win.
Kigen and Kibiwott will be seeking to extend Kenya's dominance in the race after qualifying for the finals.
