An exhibition in Berlin explores the impact the Bauhaus movement has had on photography.
This year marks 100 years since the founding of the Bauhaus school in Weimar.
STORYLINE
The Bauhaus movement - that originated with the founding of the Bauhaus school in Weimar in 1919 - is mostly known for its modernist architecture.
But, a new exhibition at the Museum of Photography in Berlin explores what impact the inter-war movement have had on photography, back then but also today.
The exhibition opens with a range of photos by László Moholy-Nagy, a Hungarian artist and designer that was a professor at the Bauhaus school.
"I think they are still very modern. Even though they are black and white," says Christine Kühn, curator of the exhibition.
"The radicalism of the composition of the pictures, the framing, the precision, the structure - that is something that is still fascinating and it is a sign of the times, the 20th century."
This year marks 100 year since the founding of the Bauhaus school, something that is celebrated across Germany with exhibitions, festivals and events.
The impact the school and the movement that was born out of it can be seen in design and architecture across the world.
But the photographs from the time were not necessarily considered "Bauhaus photos." says Ludger Derenthal, head of the photographic collection at the Museum.
"There are a lot of photographers here in the exhibition that taught at Bauhaus or were students at the Bauhaus school. But at that time no-one cared much about the brand "Bauhaus" so no-one said, 'let's make some Bauhaus photos.' Rather these photos are about the modernism movement."
The exhibition also shows contemporary works by a number of living artists that have been inspired by the Bauhaus movement or by the modernist type of photography at the time.
A number of artists are playing with the idea of a "new vision," an idea that originated at the time and demanded that artists explored photography beyond just depicting reality.
"The exhibition asks what was modern in the 1920s and 1930s when it came to photography," says Derenthal.
Some pictures use light to create effects. Other remove the photography from the camera in a technique where object are placed directly on film strips.
It is a way of exploring photography that was pioneered at the time of the Bauhaus movement, but one that has had a revival in the last few years, says Kris Scholz, curator of the exhibition.
"Right now we are experiencing a revival of the ideas of the New Vision (Neue Sehen) movement. The experimenting with photography. The removal of photography from just depiction. That is once again becoming important," he says
The exhibition "Bauhaus and Photography: On new vision in contemporary art" runs through 25 August 2019.
