(7 Sep 2018) Austria's chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, was visiting Macedonia on Friday ahead of a forthcoming referendum for a deal with neighbouring Greece to change their country's name to "North Macedonia."
The agreement would end a decades-old dispute with Athens, which says Macedonia's name implies claims on the Greek province of Macedonia and on ancient Greek heritage.
It would also facilitate Macedonia's European Union and NATO accession.
Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev said at a joint news conference with Kurz that the deal would be good for the region and the whole of the European Union.
Kurz urged Macedonians to vote in the September 30 referendum, saying the European Union will only be complete after western Balkan nations, including Macedonia, join it.
Polls indicate that most Macedonians back the deal, but it is unclear whether turnout will meet the required 50 percent threshold.
