October 15th, 2011. In a battle for the vacant WBC World Lightweight Championship, "El Nino de Oro Golden Boy" Jorge Linares battled Antonio “Tony” DeMarco in the undercard of the Bernard Hopkins vs Chard Dawson I main event where The Executioner’s WBC & The Ring Light Heavyweight Titles were on the line.
At this juncture of both their careers, Jorge had racked up notable wins over the likes of Whyber Garcia, Gamaliel Diaz, Oscar Larios, Rocky Juarez & Jesus Chavez while Antonio has yet to record his first meaningful victory.
Prefight records; Linares 31(20)-1, DeMarco 25(18)-2-1.
For most of the first half, Linares dominated the action by outworking DeMarco with dazzling hand speed and boxing skills but the tides began to turn in round 6 after he was cut on the bridge of his nose. To make matters worse for the 26 year old Argentinian, he suffered gashes around both eyes in round 8 courtesy of a number of pinpoint blows.
Despite bleeding badly, Jorge showed tremendous resolve by outboxing Antonio although his vision was evidently impeded as he began to take more and more punishment which further worsened the conditions of his facial injuries.
Going into the penultimate round, DeMarco was trailing 99-91 & 98-92 (2x) in the scorecards.
However, the 24 year old Sinaloan who was not nearly shaken by the fact that he had lost most of the rounds somehow rallied to stop Linares with barrages of relentless blows with about 24 seconds left to the bell in a great come-from-behind win to become the new WBC World Lightweight Champion.
This was Jorge Linares’ first defeat since October 2009, when he was shockingly relieved of his WBC World Super Featherweight Championship in merely 73 seconds by Juan Carlos Salgado.
As for Antonio DeMarco, this was the first crucial victory of his career.
