Here's a breakdown of one of my shots from Moana.
When starting on a shot you get a work file from layout where the rough action of a shot is setup. The layout department takes the storyboard drawings and tries to setup the shots with the actual sets and characters in the 3d environment. Once a sequence comes out of layout it's being handed over to animation.
When I start out with a shot I usually look at the layout file but also the original storyboards. At the beginning of a shot you also go to issuing with the directors, where you can ask questions about the shot and understand what the directors vision for the shot is. At that point you go back to your desk and try to work on a first pass blocking where you can pitch your take on the shot. Sometimes it works well and other times it doesn't.
In this case Ron and John wanted Moana to look more at the cave around her and also at some point I got the note to break up her walk more and have her turn around more. Usually I try to keep my early stages fairly rough to not waste too much time working in a direction and potentially realizing that this has been the wrong approach. Once you know that you're working into a direction that the directors like you tend to work more closely with the supervisors, who make sure that you've addressed all the notes properly before showing to the directors again.
On this shot @agreenster (Adam Green) was my supervisor and he gave me a lot of helpful notes on polishing the last bits and pieces of this shot before showing it for final approval.
