Lewton produced this masterpiece of dread and misdirection in the middle of his classic run of RKO horror films. Isle of the Dead sees Boris Karloff headlining (Lewton also shot The Body Snatcher with Karloff at the same time) as a Greek general trapped on a Greek isle by the plague, the past, and perhaps a demon. Inspired by Arnold Boecklin's painting "The Isle of the Dead," the Robson directed tale of fear and suspicion amongst the natives is full of unsettling, swooping camerawork that keeps the viewer increasingly off-kilter.
