Jews made up one-third of the city of Odessa before the Holocaust. During WWII, Odessa was taken over by Romania, which was a Nazi ally. The Jewish population of the city was massacred: From October 22-24, 1941, tens of thousands Jewish civilians were brutally murdered by the Romanian military. It was known as the Odessa massacre. There was only one survivor.
