Worry behaviors are things that we do in an attempt to cope with worry and reduce our anxiety, but which are actually counterproductive in the long term, because they maintain our worry and anxiety. There are two main types of worry behaviors. The first type of worry behavior is checking and this involves things like checking locks, stoves or windows repeatedly. Safety checking involves activities such as calling loved one several times a day to make sure they are safe and that nothing bad has happened to them. The third type of checking is when a person reviews their work over and over again because they are concerned that they have made a mistake. These checking behaviors tend to make a person less efficient and can mean other tasks do not get completed. The second type of worry behavior is reassurance seeking from other people. This type of reassurance seeking can lead to tension and friction in relationships, as people become increasingly frustrated with the constant requests for reassurance.
The main problem with these worry behaviors is that they become less effective over time and that it takes more reassurance seeking and checking to get the same amount of relief from anxiety. The other big problem is that these worry behaviors implicitly suggests that what the person is worrying about is highly likely to happen, thereby making the worry and anxiety worse.
