When we bought this 2000 Subaru Impresa 2.5RS a few months ago, the power steering boots on both sides were ripped and grease was going everywhere except where it belongs – on the steering rack. Replacing the boots is something you can do yourself. You can take the outer tie rod end off; the boot job is easier but then you have to get the car aligned. Or you can manhandle the new boots over the tie rod end. It takes a little longer but saves you the time and cost of an alignment. I’ll show you how to do it.

Torque the castle nut to 20 ft-lbs (240 in-lbs) and then tighten it a little more for the cotter pin to slide through.
