Thousands of people braved freezing afternoon temperatures in Belgrade on Thursday (2/1) to attend a protest rally in the centre of the Yugoslav capital. Opposition leaders, including Serbian Renewal Movement head Vuk Draskovic, addressed the huge crowd.
Meanwhile leading Orthodox Church clerics meeting on Thursday issued a
statement which appeared to offer support to the protestors. They called on the government to recognise that mistakes had been made during the recent local elections.

It means one of the most conservative institutions, one that was reluctant to take sides, or to be frank one which has taken sides with the government now opens it's door to democratic changes. We look at this as an important sign of the changes in Serbia as a whole."
