Does Medicaid transfer if I move to a different state?
That's a really great question, one that we get fairly often actually. I live in Florida, I only practice in Florida, we serve the entire state and we have people coming in from out of state give me a call and saying, Hey, I have New York Medicaid or I've Arizona Medicaid now moving to South Florida. So what do I have to do to kind of flip that switch, and I have to be the bearer of bad news and say, unfortunately, it doesn't work that way.
You have to apply again, because of what makes you eligible in one state does not necessarily make you eligible in another state. While it is a federal program. It's really a federal and state partnership. And the states have some latitude as to who is approved for the program and who is deemed ineligible.
So even if you are even eligible for 20 years in another state, when you move to Florida, you may find it doesn't work that way here or you may find that you're not eligible here. So bottom line is you have to apply. Now, assuming you meet Florida's criteria, and depending on which program you're looking for, you might be able to get Medicaid approved in the same month in which you apply.
If you're looking at a program though, remember Medicaid not one thing, Medicaid’s, a bunch of different programs, for example, the Medicaid waiver program, which is what pays for home health care, or assisted living facility care that has a waitlist, so just because you're on that program in another state, doesn't mean you get to jump right into it in Florida until some people who want to move here on that program have to make some contingencies to make sure that we can get this stuff paid for for a few months while they're waiting for their Medicaid to kick in, and they're on that waitlist.
So the short answer is no Medicaid does not automatically transfer between states you have to reapply, at least when you come to Florida and if you leave Florida that's what you have to do.
So I hope this helps if you're interested in getting approved for Florida Medicaid, regardless of your income or assets, I can help and we serve the entire state of Florida. So if you're interested, give us a call. Click on our website and schedule a consultation. Thank you very much.
