John le Carré, the renowned master spy novelist, has sadly died of pneumonia at the age of 89. The British author from Dorset, who worked for both MI5 and MI6, the British security and secret services, began his career as a writer in the 1960s. After the international success of his third novel The Spy Who Came In From the Cold (1963), he became a full-time author. There are numerous movie and TV adaptations, many of which starred some of the best British actors. Here are 5 films and TV series adaptations to watch on streaming platforms. Describing in The Guardian his experience with the movie and TV industry, seeing his stories being adapted onscreen, John le Carré wrote: "the transition remains as unpredictable to me, as frustrating and rewarding, as it ever was. (...) I have watched scenes from my novels where I sweated blood to crank up the tension, fall flat on their faces for sheer want of the most elementary stagecraft. I have seen some of my dullest, least achieved writing brought vividly to life by splendid direction and acting. In the beginning was the word. The writer lives or dies by it. To the filmmaker, in the beginning was the image. The creative battle has raged happily ever since the first movie flickered into life."Directed by Martin Ritt, The Spy That Came In From the Cold is one of the best adaptations of a John le Carré novel. Richard Burton, who delivers a brilliant performance, plays MI6 agent Alec Leamas, sent on mission to East Germany. At the time of its release, the James Bond movies were at the peak of their popularity. Le Carré here provided a counter, unglamorous, view of the spy agent. Ritt's movie was a first adaptation of a le Carré novel, which stuck pretty faithfully to the original story. Le Carré retained fond memories of his first experience of the film trade, befriending Burton and the screenwriter, "who as a former instructor in the black arts at a British spy school during the second world war turned out to know much more about espionage than I did," le Carré described in The Guardian. The Spy That Came in from the Cold is on Amazon Prime Video. One of the most acclaimed adaptations of John le Carré’s bestsellers, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was directed by Tomas Alferdson and boasts a great assemble cast. The film stars Gary Oldman as George Smiley, Colin Firth as Bill Haydon, Benedict Cumberbatch as Peter Guillam, Tom Hardy as Ricki Tarr, and Mark Strong as Jim Prideaux. This was not the first adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. In 1979, the BBC produced an excellent TV series, starring Alec Guinness. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video. This 2005 thriller was directed by Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles. Ralph Fiennes plays Justin Quayle, a British diplomat in Kenya, trying to solve the murder of his wife Tessa, played by Rachel Weisz.
