Amazon has owned the TV rights to Lord of the Rings (LOTR) for a few years, and reportedly spent over $450 million for the first season of Rings of Power. Season 2 should be released sometime during 2023.

Warner Bros. own the movie rights to the J.R.R. Tolkien content, having produced 2 trilogies: The Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit. Those films grossed over $5 billion at the worldwide box office and brought home a best picture Oscar for one of the entries.

There are multiple new Lord of the Rings movies in the works at Warner Bros., starting with War of the Rohirrim, which will then be followed by subsequent movies too. War of the Rohirrim is set hundreds of years before the events seen in Peter Jackson's original trilogy, effectively making it a prequel movie.
