Welcome to a selection of jingles from Capital Radio 104.4 FM (followed by FM104 Jingles)
Capital Radio 104.4 FM launched in Dublin on 20th July 1989 - it was Ireland's first licensed commercial radio station.

The first voice heard on Capital Radio was Scott Williams.
The first song played was: 'Old Town' by Phil Lynott
Presenters on that first day included: Colm Hayes, Dave Kelly, Aidan Leonard, Mike Duggan, Liam Coburn, Chris Barry and Ross Allen.

In August 1989, I joined Capital Radio 104.4 FM.

The studio, production, news and advertising were each located in 4 portacabins, parked on the roof car park (literally) of the Saint Stephen's Green Shopping Centre, off Grafton Street in Dublin's city centre.

CAPITAL RADIO soon moved to new purpose-built studios in The Ballast Office, Aston Quay, right in the heart of the city.

The format was "Hot Hits" and it commanded the lion's share of the Dublin City listenership, as it was the only alternative to 2FM at that time.

My job initially included presenting the daily sports news and report inserts for the "Newsbeat" current affairs programme.

One of my sports highlights was heading to Dublin Airport and arriving in Rome and going straight to the Stadio Olympico in Rome for Italia '90, for the quarter finals of the 1990 FIFA World Cup: Ireland v's Italy - that was June 30th 1990.

This was a very mementos occasion in Irish sporting history, as this was the first time ever, that an Irish soccer team had made it to the World Cup Quarter Finals.

We enjoyed the journey; we enjoyed getting there and Irish manager Jack Charlton (an Englishman!) was adopted as one of our own!

Sadly, Salvatore Schillaci's 37th minute goal secured a 1-0 win for the host country - and Ireland were out of the competition. The Irish? Well....we partied like we had won!

In Rome, the Irish fans were cheering and drinking with the Italian fans, such was the joy of the occasion.

In May 1991 - the first of a few rebrands took place. Capital 104.4 FM rebranded and transformed to ROCK 104 (changing music format in the process) - under the direction of Radio Consultant: Brad McNally.

Brad was also responsible for choosing my on-air name: STEREO STEVE!

So, the rebranding - did he get it right?
In his own words: "Didn’t get it right. I should have paid more attention to the locals who said rock means leather jackets here and heavy metal. I thought we could redefine it. BIG mistake."

In April 1992 - ROCK 104 then underwent a restructure and another rebrand: this time the name changed to FM104 (keep up!)

The traffic report fleet also got a make-over and the street vehicles changed from Nissan to Ford!

STEREO STEVE continued to present the traffic news into the Breakfast Show and Drivetime programmes - plus also the Lunchtime At Work Requests

I was working with a team of four people and we had four vehicles in the Traffic Fleet. The Fleet was also used as a marketing tool to promote products and frequently at busy traffic junctions, we were handing out hundreds of products to happy drivers!

In 1995, eventually I was given my own show: 'The Stereo Steve Overnight Radio Show on FM104'

That is when I became exposed to the toxic existence of so-called 'Playlists' - every track I played was pre-chosen and printed out on hourly sheets. If I made any change to the running order, this would result in a phone call from the even more toxic Music Director!
This actually happened more than once!

Despite these setbacks, I thoroughly enjoyed my 2 years on-air!
I loved the idea of being on radio; I loved talking to the listeners and some even went on to become lifelong personal friends.

FM104 moved premises (yet again); this time to Hume House, in Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 (Almost opposite the American Embassy)

In September 1997 - after 2 years on-air (and 8 years in total) - I eventually left FM104, happy that I had achieved a lifetime dream of working in radio and making the transition from pirate to legal radio - and the first legal commercial radio station at that!

FM104 moved premises (yet again!) and underwent even more Management changes.
It is still on the air today and operates under license from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.
