In a captivating interview with SHEcago Talks, Vici Howard reflects on her journey from a curious young writer in her grandparents' South Side Chicago apartment to the visionary force behind Black and Brown Femme Films (BBFF). Recalling the pivotal gift of a vintage typewriter from her Uncle Bubba at 13, Vici fondly reminisces about creating her world of stories. Though met with rejection, her early attempts at publishing planted seeds of resilience that still resonate in her work today. Inspired by John Hughes’ "The Breakfast Club" and Spike Lee’s "Do The Right Thing," Vici's path to filmmaking was set, driven by a desire to tell diverse stories. After earning her film degree from Columbia College Chicago and a hiatus for marriage and motherhood, Vici reignited her passion with the screenplay "11 Hours," a finalist at the 2022 Urban World Film Festival. Her subsequent short film, “The Singles,” faced festival rejections but spurred the birth of BBFF, now a beacon for inclusive storytelling and community engagement. As BBFF expands with initiatives like the Exhibition Celebrating Women of Color, Vici's mission endures to amplify marginalized voices and empower artists. Her advice resonates with aspiring filmmakers, emphasizing perseverance and community support in an evolving industry landscape.
