Summary of the project
The project goal are to build a high-temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) power plant that can supply temperature heat as high as 1000°C. The project is to develop an excellent feature that is highly inherent to safety, easy to operate with high fuel burnup. The project tries to establish environmental protection and diversification of energy usage. The project addresses reducing greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining a reliable and secure domestic energy supply and security. The high gas-cooled reactor is an economic system that is compatible with the advanced electrical and hydrogen production and high-temperature process heat application with a high ability of commercialization potential with technology option of the prismatic and pebble-bed design as well as design using coolant.
Technical, this technology has been evaluated in a wide range of industrial applications. The United Kingdom and France were the first countries that developed and used the earliest commercial gas-cooled reactors that used Carbon dioxide as a coolant. It has been found out that the technology is a viable low-carbon substitute for the burning of natural gas and fossil fuels to supply steam, electricity, and high-temperature heat to industry applications. For example, compared to a natural sized gas plant, the HTGR technology can avoid one million metric tons of CO2 per year. Another technical issue in support of the project is that it develops high-quality fuel because technology gives the most critical parameter for the determination of plant capability on reactor safety and power.
The plant is to be constructed in Spain, Madrid and the entire project is to cost US$ 4billion for it to be complete and it will take a period of 6 years for it to be completed. The plant use is to consider both domestic and commercial use. The project is going to take consideration of the safety measures put done by the Nuclear Reactor council (NRC) in Spain.
