Wailing Widow is our favourite waterfall in Scotland. There are few reasons for that. First - it is located in our beloved Assynt. It falls from Loch na Gainmhich to the picturesque gorge below. The lake is surrounded by hills and mountains and looks amazing. Second - you can admire this waterfall both from the top and from the bottom. Path to the top leads from the upper car park to the edge of the gorge or to the top of the waterfall. This path is barely visible and incredibly muddy at times and the edge of the gorge is slippery and dangerous, so care is advised (and waterproof boots). You can also get to the other side of the waterfall via stepping stones - they are also used if you want to go further along the lake to the highest waterfall in UK - Eas Chual Aluinn which we will present next week. Path to the bottom leads from small lower car park along the stream inside the gorge. It is not very long, around 10-15 minutes. It may be slippery and boggy, but not as much as the path to the top. At the end of the gorge you are rewarded with one of the most scenic views of Scotland. Waterfall is not very high, but quite wide and it falls into the pond surrounded by vertical rocks. Together with ominous rock formations of the gorge and small trees growing on banks of the river, it makes a striking impression of grandeur, serenity and danger. We visited it for the first time many years ago. At that time it was unknown, hidden place. Today it is one of the most popular attractions of the NC500 route, so it can be quite a busy place.
