You should always immediately be suspicious about any story about prejudice where the victim of violence is framed as "going too far," "going about it the wrong way, or they both-sides the whole conflict by insisting they're too angry. They always have those characters turn to just being evil, violent and irrational and never circle back to the root issue of what they were dealing with.
