Learn about Babesia's delayed onset in Lyme Disease and how Babesia can strike after Lyme treatment
Hello, my name is Dr. Daniel Cameron. In this video, I will share a published paper that highlights the case of a 67-year-old woman with delayed onset Babesia. Babesia is a parasitic illness transmitted through deer tick bites and can exacerbate the severity of Lyme disease. While Babesia symptoms can be severe and life-threatening in the early stages when parasites are visible in the red blood cells, they can also be mild or even absent in some individuals.
In my practice, I have observed Lyme disease patients who relapse after their initial treatment. Some of these patients only present with Babesia weeks after their Lyme disease treatment. These cases improve when I add a combination of Zithromax and atovaquone to their treatment regimen.
A 2018 study by Hoversten and Bartlett, published in the British Medical Journal, underscores the importance of monitoring Lyme disease patients for potential coinfections even after initial treatment. The study discusses a 67-year-old woman treated for early Lyme disease who later developed Babesia near the end of her antibiotic course.
This video demonstrates the critical need for thorough evaluation of Babesia in Lyme disease patients who fail to respond to initial treatment or experience a relapse.
