The Asteraceae or Aster plant family has over 233,000 species, 1,620 genera, and 12 subfamilies. It is composed of herbaceous species, shrubs, vines, and trees. Its former name, Compositae is easily understood once you examine this group up close. Each daisy-like flower is composed of many, many tiny flowers instead of petals. This prominent medicinal family consists of plants such as Arnica, Chamomile, Calendula, and Echinacea.

The plants from this family are extremely rich in alkaloids with medicinal properties that include antiseptic and anti-inflammatory that is soothing to the skin and digestion system. Essential oils from this family include Everlasting (Helichrysum angustifoliate), German Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), and Yarrow (Achillea millefolium).
