FirstEnergy's Bruce Mansfield Plant - located in Shippingport, Pa. - is one of the largest electric power plants in the United States, producing enough electricity to power more than 1.5 million homes. The Bruce Mansfield Plant is a recognized showplace for environmental technology, with more than one out of every three dollars spent to build the $1.4 billion facility going to environmental protection measures. The plant was the first in the nation to install scrubbers as original equipment, removing 92 percent of the sulfur dioxide from its emissions. This removal process creates coal combustion byproducts, which are then stored at a residual waste disposal facility known as Little Blue Run. Beginning in late 2016, FirstEnergy will begin shutting down Little Blue Run as a disposal site and will continue a comprehensive monitoring program to inspect and maintain the property.
