LESS MUSIC
This is a new version of an earlier video only with less prominent music

The top-of-the-range 401, for domestic use. The 401G was made in Germany (hence the G). If you have a 401a, the A indicates the machine was built in the USA.
The 401 was the successor of the 301. And the 301 was as far as I know not sold in Europe. So to us in the EU the predecessor was the AMAZING 201. Singer wanted to make the 201 even better – the 401 was that machine.
And it was capable of doing multiple (in-build) zigzag-patterns!
A 401 has a rotating hook, you probably know from the 201. Like the 201 the Singer 401 uses the type 66 bobbins and standard 15x1 needles.
It’s all in this video!
BTW: It is not necessary to remove the cover plate when you want to oil the 401. But when you want to grease it too it does has to be removed for access.
I have multiple vids online on vintage Singer sewing machines. Feel free to watch more…
