In the early hours of Monday (july 5) morning, Minardi Sporting Director, John Walton suffered a serious heart attack. He was rushed to the Cardiac Unit at St Thomas's Hospital, where he passed away on Friday (july 9) night. As a mark of respect, Minardi team members took the decision not to run in Saturday’s opening practice session of the 2004 F1 British GP. On Sunday, a minute of silence was observed and decision was taken to run the Grand Prix with a livery featuring only Walton nickname 'John Boy' on the car.
