The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has welcomed the
sentencing of 87 illegal miners to a combined jail term of more than
600 years.

Chairperson of the department's portfolio committee Sahlulele Luzipo
says a joint oversight visit to Klerksdorp and Rustenburg last year
re-enforced the committee's long-held belief that zama zamas are run
and funded by sophisticated ringleaders.
