Most of us have a hard enough time navigating the social world of middle school at the age of 13. Not Dolly. She was ready to conquer “country's most famous stage.” Here, Dolly shares the details of her first time on the Grand Ole Opry stage.
From the Country Music Icons Documentary series (dist. Monarch Films).
Dolly Parton is an American music icon and longtime member of the Grand Ole Opry. Ever since she was a little girl, she dreamed of performing on the Opry stage. To prepare for that moment, Dolly would sing to her siblings and a captive audience of farm animals from the porch of her family’s Tennessee Mountain Home. She went so far as to fashion a makeshift microphone from tobacco sticks and a tin can. Her can-do spirit and ingenuity would serve her well, landing her on the Opry stage by the age of 13. From there, her career would quickly build to international performances and untold numbers of sold-out concerts.
“I just pictured myself out there in the big world singing songs I’d written, performing to people and getting out of the mountains and just traveling around.”
