Over the last fifty years, American cities have largely rebranded themselves not as places to live and work, but as brands and destinations for tourism, investment, and shopping. But this transformation, with its colossal sports complexes and shining megadevelopments, not only failed to resolve cities' financial and demographic crises, but was deeply linked to skyrocketing inequality, rising police brutality...and the suburban shopping mall.
In this video, we discuss the false promise of America's urban renaissance amidst the rise of neoliberal order, the stripping back of the state to its core policing functions, and the dominance of the ultra-wealthy across contemporary society.
