Death Date: October 10, 1929
Born Free in Ontario, Canada In 1843 to parents who had escaped slavery in the United States, McCoy would move to Michigan as a young man where he began working with steam lubrication techniques.
He would develop an automatic lubricator, for locomotive steam engines, along with several other inventions of a similar nature. He would file 57 patents for his inventions.
50 of which were for Lubricating systems.
At the turn of the Century, he was believed to have produced more patents than any Black inventor of that time.
Some have attributed the phrase, “The Real McCoy” to him and his inventions. (Note: This may not be completely accurate, Only hear say speculation).
Several Historic sites in Michigan are named for McCoy and celebrate his Achievements.
McCoy was inducted into the National inventors Hall of Fame in 2001.

By 1926, he had patented more than forty Inbricating devices used internationally on trains and boats and In factories.
McCoy, Trained as a mechanical
engineer in Scotland. This son of former slaves, faced Racial Discrimination in the US. and made his living as a fireman stoking fires and oiling engines for the Michigan Central Railroad.
McCoy sought to end the delays caused by frequent oil stops. In his Ypsilanti workshop he developed a lubricating cup that continuously fed oil to steam engines.
McCoy other inventions and patents included a folding ironing table, Assurances of authenticity of McCoy lubricating cups are believed to have been the origin of the phrase “The Real McCoy”.

Elijah McCoy, the noted black inventor. lived on this site for much of his adult life.
Born in 1844, to fugitive slaves residing in Canada, McCoy was trained in Scotland as a mechanical engineer, and came to Michigan after the Civil War.
Discrimination forced him to become a fireman on the Michigan Central Railroad.
In 1872, McCoy patented his first automatic lubricating cup which oiled the locomotive while the train was in motion, This eliminated frequent stops for oiling.
McCoy soon moved to Detroit where he Improved his designs, and later set up a company to manufacture lubricators.
These lubricators were installed in locomotives and steamships both here and abroad. McCoy died in 1929, honored for his Important engineering innovations.
