This Jazz Piano Tutorial is about Polytonality and Polymodality.
Polytonality is the use of two or more different Major or minor scales with different tonal centres.
While Polymodality is the use of Two or more different modes with the same tonal centres, OR two or more different modes with different tonal centres.
Jazz improvisation is very often Polymodal, for example:
- Playing C Lydian over CMaj7 in a II-V-I Progression
But occasionally the actual written out melodies are themselves polytonal or polymodal.
