There comes a time when your waterlilies will have outgrown the basket and used up all the nutrients in the soil. Early spring is an excellent time divide and replant your waterlilies in fresh aquatic or heavy garden soil. Don't be afraid to be brutal when you are removing your waterlilies from their old aquatic basket as they are quite tough. When removing them do try to keep a good portion of the root system attached, as this will help them re-establish themselves and grow more quickly. You don't need to purchase expensive aquatic soil to replant them in as normal garden soil is just fine, as long as its of a heavy or clayey consistence and hasn't been treated with any chemicals or fertiliser recently. Remember to always plant the waterlily rhizome, horizontal or slightly diagonal with the crown always above the soil and gravel level.
